Hunting horns, military horns and post pipes were the predecessors of modern brass instruments. Those instruments didn't have any gear and produced only some sounds of natural scale. Various timbres of sounds were produced only with the help of lips of a performer. Fanfares and other martial and hunting signals appeared actually at that time. The natural scale was the basis of these sounds and people began to use them in musical art.

With the developing of metal working progress and the production musical instruments of brass it became feasible to make tubes of various dimensions and finishing. During the progress of brass instruments and the improvement of different natural scale sound playing the notion of natural instruments appeared. There were no valve instruments, that is why such musical instruments could perform only natural scale. Different brotherhoods of piper gathered at that time. There were two types of them: marching pipers and chamber trumpet-players that performed difficult parts in hard high register.

People created valve mechanism only at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It strictly transformed the technique of playing and heightened the ability of brass instruments. An additional crown was included in the basic pipe, it increased the size of an instrument and lowered its pitch.
